It is one of the branches of the International Council on Archives (ICA) and covers the Arab countries. It was founded in 1972. Its headquarters have moved between

a number of Arab capitals, starting with Baghdad, then Tunis, and finally Algeria.

The general objectives of ARABICA are as follows:

  • Carrying out the goals and endeavors of the International Council on Archives.
  • Establishing, strengthening, and maintaining relationships between archivists in all countries of the region, and between all professional institutions and organizations involved in the care, organization, and management of archives.
  • Supporting all measures taken to preserve and protect the archival heritage of the region, defending it against any type of risk, and achieving prosperity in all aspects and facets related to the management and preservation of this archival heritage.
  • Facilitating access to archival materials in the region by making them more widely known and encouraging everything that facilitates their use and utilization.
  • Encouraging, organizing, and coordinating events related to the archival field in the region.
  • Ensuring professional training for archivists in the region.
  • Cooperating with other organizations and institutions involved in documenting and utilizing human experience
